BONUS: EP30 Extras

Didn’t get enough vintage metal talk in the Trick or Treat episode? Well, fear not, rivetheads! Matt and Jason thrall you with their metal acumen and reminiscences of 1986 album releases, and the majesty of KISS, plus loads of relevant trivia. Plenty of fond nostalgia for you decrepit old headbangers. Your handsome hosts then wrap up their disconnected rant with some Halloween horror movie suggestions. Rock!

  1. The Pie Wizard.

    • The Pie Wizard!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much for that, it has been eating me up for days! Gene “The Pie Wizard” Hoglan! Maybe he had shares in the Hostess company or something…

  2. I believe, although am not a 100% , that his favorite flavor was blueberry. Also, it was heard tell that he could down double digit quantities ofof those things in a single sitting.

As for Dark Angel, I saw them when they opened for Possessed a very, very long time ago at the Paradise in Boston. I also, remember that at the end of their set, Gene ran to front of the stage and threatened to stage dive upon the understandably horrified crowd. I can still see his ponderous bulk heaving towards us in my mind’s eye to this day still. The horror..the horror..

And btw, I really liked this bonus episode, although I think you may have inadvertently underestimated Venom’s influence on the black metal genre. For it must be remembered that while Bathory was indeed a tremendous influence on the Scandinavian BM scene, they(Quothon) were, originally, nothing but a Venom clone, albeit not a musical one per se, but in terms of imagery/song titles, there can be little doubt which well he was drawing from.

I’d also think that Hellhammer/Celtic Frost’s influence can not be strongly stressed enough as well, especially in that they did invent the death metal genre.

Looking back, it’s also worth noting the very big influence bands like GBH and discharge had on the then metal scene as well.

  3. Too true on all counts, RW. We had to limit our scope to 1986 simply in the interest of time constraints, so we (perhaps indecently) are guilty of a little myopia on this one. Perhaps if we did a “History of Horror in Music Special”? Any takers on that one?
